There is a fantastic series in Netflix titled: New Amsterdam. The show is centered in a major hospital in NYC. The main character is the hospital manager. In the first scene and on his first day on the job, he gathered his physicians and asked: How can I help?
When was the last time someone asked you this question? Better yet, when was the last time you asked someone this question? I like to think that am a helpful person and yet, I will admit that my actions are not always helpful, even when my heart is in the right place. Let's face it, I am human and as such, I make mistakes.
A few months ago, at the end of a telehealth conference with one of my mother's doctors, I asked him the following question: How can I help? The answer was clear and confusing, all at the same time. It became evident that I needed to go home to the island to help care for my mother. This part of the answer was clear. It also became evident that I struggled with leaving my students. This part of the answer was confusing, because I did not know how I was going to be able to help them. So, I did a "rewind" on what my students and I have been doing for the past eleven years and within minutes, the answer was clear as mud: tell them a story.
Stories are engaging because they allow all of us to become emotionally involved. They get us. They make us think and connect with others around us. But, what if you are not able to be in the classroom? Give your students a story to read.
It is with this in mind that I started writing cultural articles and sharing them on Twitter, IG and FB. The response I received was so positive that I decided to keep writing, because this is a way in which I can help. I can help my students as well as teachers around the globe. These articles are leveled and come with a multitude of pre and post reading activities. They can support a reader that you and your students are reading or be a stand alone week-long lesson plan. I will post the links to the articles I have shared in social media under the "articles" tab.
